The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

Title: The Golem and the Jinni
Author: Helene Wecker
Pages: 484
Finished: 3/28/17

First Sentence: The Golem's life began in the hold of a steamship.

Summary: Chava the Golem, finds herself set adrift in New York City, 1899, after her master wakes her and almost immediately dies. Ahmed the Jinni wakes up in the same time and place after a metalsmith accidentally frees him from his copper prison. Both must find their way in this strange, new world so different from where they were from. And both must eventually stop a great evil that connects them both.

Thoughts: Wow. This book popped up as a readalike to either The Night Circus or Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel. I'm not sure which. Either way, it was just what I was looking for. Fair warning, if you like a strong plot, this is not the book for you. But if you enjoy yummy character development with a plot that takes some time to kindle before suddenly burning to the end, then you'll enjoy this one. The first 200 pages or so are primarily Chava and Ahmed trying to figure out their place in the world. I was instantly drawn to Chava. It must have been so hard constantly ignoring people's wants the way she did. Constantly showing she was alive when in reality she's just a lump of clay.

I also appreciated the flashbacks in the Jinni's life where we slowly find how he came to be trapped.

My only disappointment was the fact that one storyline seemed as though it didn't quite finish. But I think one could make a safe assumption. In the end, this was an incredibly enjoyable read.
